The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is almost through with its investigation of Mel Gibson. So will he actually be charged with a crime? TMZ reports that the police have completed all of their interviews in the domestic violence case against Gibson, and are waiting on paperwork to officially wrap up the investigation. Once that happens, all of the evidence will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office. The D.A. can then prosecute Gibson, if they believe the evidence supports the criminal charges.
And what, exactly, would those charges be? Gibson is facing accusations of three crimes against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva and their infant daughter Lucia: domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and child endangerment. He could be brought to trial on any or all of these charges, or the case could be dismissed. Rumor has it that the other domestic investigation into Gibson, by the Department of Child and Family Services, will clear Gibson of charges — but that investigation is unrelated to this one. Neither of the reports is likely to be official for at least two weeks yet.

In the meantime, the court of public opinion is open for business. Whoopi Goldberg has been an unlikely defender of Mel Gibson throughout the scandal, arguing on The View that Grigorieva must be lying about the violence, because she didn’t go to the police. On Monday, attorney-to-the-stars Gloria Allred wrote an open letter to Whoopi, explaining the reasons why battered women are frequently reluctant to go to the police.
