The custody battle between Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva has been full of shocking revelations and accusations, but the couple may end up someplace very unexpected: co-parenting classes. According to People, court-ordered parenting classes are standard in cases like Gibson and Grigorieva’s, when there’s an extreme amount of bitterness between the couple.“They’ll be ordered to co-parenting classes if they haven’t already,” a Los Angeles family lawyer tells the magazine. “Judge Scott Gordon will do everything he can to get their situation under control, turn down the heat, and get both sides focused on the best interest of the baby.” There’s precedent for this: Gordon was also the judge in Britney Spears and Kevin Federline‘s divorce, and ordered the couple to attend co-parenting counseling as part of the settlement.

Getting along for the sake of baby Lucia, 9 months, sounds like an noble cause — but don’t the ongoing criminal investigations (of Gibson for alleged domestic violence, and of Grigorieva for alleged extortion) make that goal a little unlikely? Doesn’t matter, says the lawyer — even if one parent ends up in jail, the custody case will proceed independently. As he puts it: “Whether they like it or not, Mel and Oksana have to get along for the rest of their lives because of their child. They have no choice.”

Lucia should be the priority for these feuding parents — but right now, they seem determined to take each other down. E! reports that both Gibson and Grigorieva have been shopping around for additional lawyers. And TMZ recently reported that Grigorieva turned down a $15 million settlement with Gibson because she didn’t want him having unsupervised visits with their daughter. However this ugly fight ends, we have a feeling their definition of “co-parenting” won’t have too much “co” in it.
