In his latest family-oriented comedy, “Grown Ups,” Adam Sandler rounded up pals Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider to play former childhood basketball teammates who gather for a weekend reunion in the country.
Sandler’s Lenny Feder is the most successful among the quintet, a high-powered Hollywood agent with a trophy wife (Salma Hayek) and two kids who are near the age Lenny was when he triumphed with his team.
But Lenny’s kids are Beverly Hills snobs, addicted to Vos or Fuji water, designer duds and video toys. They are mystified why their dad wants them to go outside and play in the woods.
Sandler, the father of two daughters, Sadie, 4, and 20-month-old Sunny, co-wrote “Grown Ups.”
“The idea of my kids being spoiled, I go to sleep thinking about it and I wake up thinking about it,” the Brooklyn, N.Y.,-born, New Hampshire-raised Sandler admitted during a press conference at Malibou Lake Mountain Club.
“I’m trying to do the right thing. With the amount of money I have, it’s difficult raising children the way that I was raised, as the son of an electrician.”
But, he joked, “I took away the west and north wing of the house from those guys. So they’re not allowed in there.”
While he’s made a career of playing arrested adolescents in adult bodies, Sandler, 43, realized fatherhood makes for profound changes.
“When you’re around the kids, you feel like you act the most grownup just because you’re supposed to lead. I say things, like, every other day that reminds me of my own parents. One thing that I do know about being a parent is that you understand why your father was in a bad mood a lot.”
If family is the core of “Grown Ups,” it’s fitting Sandler surrounded himself with an extended family. He wrote the film specifically for his actor buds.
“The whole idea was putting together old friends, and all these guys are my old friends. I’m glad that they said yes.”
