Of all the Glee characters that will be singing a new tune when season two rolls around, none is more surprising than our favorite obsessive compulsive guidance counselor, Emma.

After all, remember her pep talk to Will from last fall that caused him to start Acafellas? “They say it takes more certainty than talent to become a star. I mean, look at John Stamos.”

I hope she’s ready to be looking at John Stamos a little bit more: the Full House star and sometime Broadway actor (he’s appeared in Bye Bye Birdie, Cabaret and Nine) is nearing a deal to play Emma’s new love interest, her dentist Carl Howell.

But with the kiss that Will Schuster laid on Emma in the Glee finale, the Emma-Will Schuster-John Stamos love triangle should produce some major drama and at least a couple big musical numbers.

As for last night’s finale, Glee looked to be back in top form, starting with Sue Sylvester laying a monster of an insult about Will’s hair (”I’m having a really difficult time hearing anything you have to say today, because your hair looks like a briar patch. I keep expecting racist animated Disney characters to pop up and start singing songs about living on the bayou.”); continuing with a medley performance of Journey tunes, including the “Don’t Stop Believing” that launches a thousand Gleeks; and ending with the kind of realism and depth that had been lacking in the previous learn-a-lesson, theme episodes.

Just because you try your best doesn’t mean you win, and just because we love those plucky and talented underdogs doesn’t mean they outperformed Vocal Adrenaline. But despite the setback, glee club will go on another year (yay!) and after the quiet denouement of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on ukulele, for the first time in weeks I can’t wait to see what Glee comes up with next.
