How does Simon Cowell feel after nearly 10 years on American Idol?
It’s quite simple, bored. Simon told Oprah this week that, “After a while, you start to go on automatic pilot. Too many times, I was sitting there [at the judges’ table] bored. The audience deserves more than that… and I can’t hide when I’m bored.”
But that doesn’t mean Simon doesn’t still enjoy being in the judges’ seat. He’s leaving Idol for X Factor this year, a UK sensation that will be adapted to a U.S. format.
“I actually like doing it, funny enough. I remember [‘Idol’ Season 3 winner] Fantasia singing “Summertime,” and for three minutes, I lost myself. I like the buzz it creates. You want to be part of something people are talking about. I love that feeling.”
He elaborated by saying that X Factor will be different from Idol in that there is no upper-age limit and that groups can enter. He added that the show’s success will hinge upon finding a new star.
Perhaps Simon is just sick of Idol, as many longtime fans might be. For every superstar success like Chris Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson, there were winners like Taylor Hicks and David Cook whose careers never really took off.
