Tiger Woods’s Caddy Vows to Protect Him from Hecklers

By People.com

Tiger Woods’s longtime caddy, Steve Williams, promises it will be business as usual when Woods returns to golf – and that includes a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to hecklers in the crowd.

“Nothing will change,” Williams tells Australia’s Sun-Herald. “My job is to give him the best information I can and get him around in the fewest possible strokes.”

That involves limiting distractions like rowdy fans – a job that could prove more difficult given Woods’ lengthy personal crisis since Thanksgiving involving embarrassing admissions of marital infidelity.

But Williams, who’s been confrontational with fans in the past, vows to give Woods “a level playing field. Nothing will change from that aspect. I won’t do anything differently. I won’t view him any differently. I will do the utmost best to be as professional as I can.”

Williams, 46, a New Zealander, has been the regular caddy for Woods since 1999, and is known for being aggressively loyal to his star player.

He’s had several run-ins with fans on tour, including an incident at the 2004 U.S. Open, when he confiscated one fan’s camera. “I’m not being a bully,” he said at the time. “I’m just doing what I have to do to make our jobs easier.”
