“Dexter” star Michael C. Hall recently revealed that he has been battling a form of cancer called Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that, with his treatments almost complete, the disease is in remission.
On Sunday at the Golden Globes, as Hall took the stage to accept his award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama, the effects of those treatments were on full display. The actor sported a black winter hat to cover what appeared to be hair loss. Chemotherapy, often used to treat various types of cancer, can lead to the loss of hair follicles.
Nonetheless, the 38-year-old was full of energy and confidence as he delivered a brief speech in front of peers and co-workers. “It’s really a hell of a thing to go to work at a place where everyone gives a damn,” he said, his voice beginning to waver. “That’s definitely the case with ‘Dexter.’ It’s an amazing group from top to bottom — such an invigorated sense of collaborative energy all the time. It’s a dream job, and I’m so grateful.”
As he spoke, his “Dexter” co-star John Lithgow, who had just won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, looked on with his hands clasped and an enormous smile on his face. So too was “Dexter” co-star Jennifer Carpenter beaming — in addition to playing Hall’s sister on the Showtime series, she’s also his wife in real life.
“Jennifer, all my love and gratitude,” he said.
He then added, “Hi mom!”
