The judging panel on “American Idol” may soon get a little less cranky.
Simon Cowell’s own brother is now adding to the rumors that the tough-love judge is leaving the hit Fox show, E! Online reports.
“A press statement is being prepared which will confirm what everybody expected: Simon will leave ‘Idol’ at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of ‘X Factor’ to U.S. TV in 2011,” Tony Cowell announced on his podcast, “The Cowell Factor.”
“The X Factor,” a Cowell-produced show that is already a hit in the U.K., pits aspiring pop singers and performers against each other for a shot at a recording contract.
It’s been reported earlier that Cowell has talked to Fox about leaving “Idol” when his contract is up at the end of 2010, to focus on a 2011 debut of “X Factor.”
If Cowell leaves “American Idol,” he’d be the second original judge to leave the series.
Paula Abdul won’t be returning when the show’s ninth season begins on Jan. 12.
