The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in New York is to close just a year after it opened, it has been announced.
S2BN Entertainment, one of the corporate partners behind the venture, made the announcement in a statement but gave no reason for the decision.
The annex, which opened in December 2008, is the home to hundreds of items from artists including The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
It will close its doors on 3 January 2010 at 2000 local time.
A message on the museum’s website said it was exploring opportunities for a travelling tour that would bring the collection of displays to music fans and rock enthusiasts around the world.
The annex currently displays Bruce Springsteen’s 1957 Chevy and a John Lennon exhibit which includes a paper bag containing the bloody clothes from the night he was shot dead.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg hailed the venture as another cultural destination for the roughly 46 million visitors to New York City every year when it first opened.
Financial backers had hoped to attract up to 500,000 visitors annually, but attendance figures have not been revealed.
The non-profit Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland, Ohio, generates around $5m (£3m) in revenue annually for the state and local government and employs 936 people.
