In an open letter, the filmmaker Roman Polanski has offered his gratitude to people who have written him letters of support while he was jailed in Winterthur prison, near Zurich, and while he remains under house arrest in his chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland, The Associated Press reported. In a letter to his friend Bernard-Henri Lévy published online at The Huffington Post, Mr. Polanski wrote: “I would like every one of them to know how heartening it is, when one is locked up in a cell, to hear this murmur of human voices and of solidarity in the morning mail. In the darkest moments, each of their notes has been a source of comfort and hope.” A decision on Mr. Polanski’s extradition to the United States, which he fled in 1978 after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, is expected next year.
