Natalie Portman got a firsthand glimpse into the harsh realities of war as she researched her role in “Brothers.”
In the movie, Portman plays Grace Cahill, wife of Marine Sam (Tobey Maguire) and mother of two young daughters.
Grace learns that Sam has been killed overseas and turns to his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) for support.
Before filming began, Portman, 28, met with Marine wives.
“I think I had a much more stereotype of military families before I started talking to people,” she said.
“They talked about their experiences and how their kids reacted and the kinds of things that husbands would do before they left. What it was like when they came back and how everything changed.”
She was intrigued by the women’s sense of being soldiers in their own right.
“They viewed the home as being their own front; they really had to keep everything under control at home so that their husbands could do their jobs. Even if there was something going on, the kids acting up or it was hard to pay the bills, you never tell your husband because they need to focus on their job. There’s nothing that they can do because they’re away.”
The “job” of Marine wife and mother then is, “just to be like, ‘Honey, it’s all under control. I’ve got it all under control.’ They’re tough. They’re soldiers in their own way.”
“Brothers” opens Friday.
