NBC has not yet admitted defeat with its prime time talk show experiment “The Jay Leno Show.”
But some say it’s coming.
Despite a strong start, “The Jay Leno Show” has now fallen to a status where reruns on opposing network are consistently beating the former Tonight Show host in the nightly battle for ratings.
But NBC and the viewing public still love Jay Leno.
Throughout it all, Leno has remained enormously popular. And while “The Jay Leno Show” doesn’t seem to be working in prime time merely by virtue of its time slot, viewers would likely welcome Jay Leno back to the Tonight Show in a heartbeat.
Although Jay Leno is getting a lot of attention for the uphill battle his new program is fighting, the real consideration by NBC may be whether or not the peacock network should fire Conan O’Brien.
Since taking over the reigns of The Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien’s ratings have tanked, consistently losing to David Letterman.
Jay Leno recently revealed that he would return to The Tonight Show if asked.
He just needs NBC to ask.
So far they haven’t. And, for now, it isn’t clear how long NBC will allow the suffering to continue before tough decisions are made and swift actions are taken
