Apparently, Aerosmith has more problems on their plate than just their singer’s broken shoulder.
Two months ago, frontman Steven Tyler fell off a stage, causing both the break and the cancellation of the remainder of the band’s Summer/Fall tour.
Now Joe Perry, the band’s co-leader, tells Reuters that Tyler has not spoken to his band mates since that event in early August, communicating with them only through his new managers.
Perry also revealed his frustrations over Tyler’s reluctance to write new songs with him. The two haven’t composed a new piece together in 10 years.
“I’m down in my studio every day, writing, and for some reason he wants to write with people like (songwriter) Mark Hudson and whatever,” Perry said. “I can’t explain it.”
The songs Perry hoped Aerosmith would record in the last few years have instead ended up on his new solo album, “Have Guitar Will Travel.”
Perry himself sings on most of the CD’s songs, though an unknown German vocalist, named Hagen Grohe, fronts four tracks. Perry’s wife Billie discovered Grohe on YouTube.
The guitarist believes one new song, titled “Do You Wonder,” could have been a huge hit for his main band. “It could have been – if there was an Aerosmith to record it,” Perry said, “if it ever had people that actually believed it.”
Perry will support this solo album with his own tour starting in November and lasting through early 2010.
Still, at the end of October, Aerosmith must reunite to play a pair of shows in Hawaii, forced by a lawsuit filed by fans angry over the cancellation of a planned performance there two years ago.
As for his future, Perry said “I’m wide open. I’m out there and playing better than I’ve played in a long time. I’m doing some of these other side projects and I’m looking forward to doing more.”
(Recently Perry played in Las Vegas with Slash, of Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver).
Still, the guitarist holds out hope that his 40-year-old band may yet patch up their differences and soldier on. “I’m an eternal optimist,” he said. We’ve been though some pretty thin times and some pretty thick times, and there have been periods when Steven and I – for no reason other than just to get some space – have not talked to each other for months. Then we get back together and things mesh.”
“I think we need more time to get everybody healthy and the whole thing, and see if Steven wants to be part of the band again.”
