“Surrogates” depicts life in the future as a world comprised of ridiculously good looking robots that live the lives of everyday people while their operators control them via their brain waves from the comfort of their own home. Much like a true version of the internet craze “Second Life,” people live, work, and party through their “surries”. Operators are able to go out into the real world and feel every sense that their “surrie” feels without every worrying about the dangers of real life. That is, until someone develops a weapon that kills surrogate operators by infecting their surrogates with an instantly killing computer virus.
Bruce Willis plays a FBI agent named Tom Greer who never leaves his home and fights crime via his much younger looking surrie with blonde hair. Australian born actress, Radha Mitchell, is Willis’ partner in the movie who owns a fierce surrie that can jump from cars and buildings, but in reality she is a homely lonesome woman with really bad teeth. Willis’ character Tom tries to reconnect with his wife, played by Rosamund Pike, who is completely surrogate bound since the death of their son caused her to become addicted to her robot and too afraid to face the outside world.
The movie held great promise; director Jonathan Mostow created a realistic version of the future in which immerses the audience into this surrogate driven world. He made sure to portray the world with all the accommodations for surrogates, like placing robot chargers in the streets, subways, and buildings. He also shows how people may take advantage of having surrie as he depicts a smoking hot blonde female surrie operated by a fat disgusting man.
However, the plot the plot of the movie could really used some help. It seemed as though the movie was really focused on created some kind of twist at the end and never really took the time to make the film truly entertaining. Sure, the movie is action packed with loads of chase scenes and murders, but somehow it gets boring. The concept was great but the storyline was certainly lacking in some areas.
