LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plane made an emergency landing Friday after the cockpit filled with smoke, officials said.

The governor’s office said in a statement that Schwarzenegger’s jet was diverted from a planned landing in Santa Monica, Calif., to Van Nuys Airport after the pilot reported “smoke emanating from the instrument panel in the cockpit,” CNN reported.

Schwarzenegger was heading to Santa Monica after a speech in Mendota, Calif., about the drought affecting the state when the jet was forced to make “quick, steep, but safe landing,” the statement said.

The governor was unhurt, and in fact wrote about the incident on the social networking Web site Twitter, telling readers, “A little adventure just now when my plane made an emergency landing. All’s OK, though,” and including a photo of the jet on the tarmac, the U.S. broadcaster said.
