Gay blogger Perez Hilton posted a statement on his Web site late on Tuesday night following a day in which the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation demanded that he apologize for using the word “faggot” during an altercation with members of the Black Eyed Peas in Toronto on Monday.
Hilton, who did not utter the word “sorry” in the statement, once again defended his use of the antigay slur toward BEP frontman will.i.am as an effort to disarm his opponent with “the most hurtful word I know.”
“I wanted to hurt him with the word I chose, not anyone else,” said Hilton. “Unfortunately, the one who got hurt was me and, subsequently, a lot of other people. I wish none of it had happened. I can’t take it back,” he said.
Hilton initially claimed via Twitter that will.i.am punched him in the face at the afterparty for the Much Music Awards, although the band’s manager, Polo Molina, later turned himself in to authorities.
On Tuesday, GLAAD censured Hilton for behavior that it said “legitimizes use of a slur that is often linked to violence against our community.”
Hilton downplayed the charge in his latest statement.
”Clearly, I am not homophobic,” he said. “Also, I am not nor have I ever claimed to be a spokesperson for the gay community. I am just speaking for myself, a gay man.”
He added that he was disturbed by the response to the attack against him, such as statements that it was karma for his controversial blogging tactics.
“Stripped away from the mask of Perez Hilton, I have been extremely bothered by the public reaction to my assault,” he said.
Hilton vowed to continue to fight for gay rights, and to fight legally against the assault he experienced.
