Just a few months ago, no one knew what Tom Cruise would be starring in next. He had around seven different major roles to choose from, all with something unique to offer. However, Variety is reporting today that Cruise has decided to go with Wichita, the “action comedy” at 20th Century Fox that he will star in with Cameron Diaz. It came down to a choice between Motorcade and Wichita, and Cruise went with the latter. Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold will be helming Wichita, in which Cruise will play an undercover agent who gets thrown together with a single woman who has “man trouble.”

The screenplay for Wichita was originally written by Dana Fox, then revised by Scott Frank. Mangold himself is tweaking the current draft with Laeta Kalogridis (of Shutter Island). Let’s hope all of these revisions haven’t watered down the screenplay. Fox is looking to get this out by summer of 2010. I’m wondering if Cruise and his agent took into account all the positive buzz that came from Tropic Thunder, as this is a comedy and Motorcade was just another action thriller. Here’s to hoping he finds time to shoot David Cronenberg’s The Matarese Circle before moving on to Wichita, as I’d love to see him in that, too.
