Late night funnyman Jay Leno has checked into a hospital with an unknown illness – and Thursday’s “Tonight Show” taping was canceled, a spokeswoman said.
One of Hollywood’s hardest working comics, Leno wasn’t feeling well and sought treatment, NBC spokeswoman Tracy St. Pierre told the Daily News.
She was quick to shoot down Internet chatter that Leno, 58, had a heart attack.
“No! My Gosh!” she said. “He’s doing fine.”
A report on NBC-owned “Access Hollywood” speculated that Leno had food poisoning, but St. Pierre said she did not believe that was the case, but she declined to elaborate further.
Leno was said to be in “good spirits” and writing jokes from his hospital bed, Los Angeles TV station KTLA reported.
Guests lined up for the cancelled show included hunky actor Ryan Reynolds, Jules Sylvester and the swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
NBC is expected to air a repeat of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” Thursday night.
Leno, who’s helmed the “Tonight Show” since May 1992 is scheduled to move to the10 p.m. hour in June, sparing NBC the need for more expensive primetime programming. Starting June 1, comedian Conan O’Brien is taking over the 11:30 p.m. slot that follows local news.
