And now welcome to the latest in our occasional series: “Credit crunch? What credit crunch?”

If you’re finding it hard to rustle up the mortgage or rent money this month, you may be heartened by news that not everyone is finding it tough during the current economic crisis.

Take Mariah Carey, for example. The unstoppable warbler has reportedly just put in an offer on the world’s most expensive mansion, which has an eye-popping list price of $125m (around £86m).

Now, the Beverly Hills property does sound a little on the pricey side – but you do get plenty for your money.

Some examples? French limestone floors, gold-embossed leather wall coverings, gold leaf crown mouldings, a bathroom with ceiling frescoes, a 50-seat cinema, a championship tennis court and a library stocked with rare books. Oooh – I wonder if it has a copy of Fly Fishing by JR Hartley.

Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? I know! Let’s all have a whip-round and try to gazump Mariah!
