The Queen of Pop is in the process of adopting another African child into her family. A court in the southern African country of Malawi will be reviewing the adoption of a baby girl called Mercy James next week. An official at the ministry of Gender and Child Development told Reuters, “Her name is Mercy James from Mchinji Home of Hope orphanage. She has no father and mother, they both died… We finished the assessment yesterday in readiness for the courts next week.”
Several years ago, Madonna adopted a baby boy from the same orphanage, named David. Madonna is expected to arrive in Malawi this weekend in time for court proceedings starting on Monday. Madonna’s adoption process could be hindered by several factors though, including her recent divorce from British film director Guy Ritchie. Her 12 year old daughter Lourdes was also born out of wedlock which raised some moral concerns when she was adopting David and could hinder this process as well.
Simon Chisale, Malawi’s child welfare chief told the New York Daily News, “We do not only look at the material issues, but also the moral standing or prospective adoptive parents, because we do not want our children’s morals to be corrupted.”
The 50-year old pop diva also has an 8-year old son named Rocco with Ritchie. Her adoption of David was just finalized last May.
