I still refuse to believe that Steve Irwin, 44, the ‘Crocodile Hunter’ died Monday 04.09.06 after being stabbed in the chest by the stingray’s poisonous spine while filming on the Great Barrier Reef. He was quite a celebrity around the world, becoming a star as the Crocodile Hunter on Discovery’s Animal Planet channel. Experts say deaths from a stingray encounter are exceedingly rare, but how did that helped him? Although he died for doing something he loved Steve Irwin - who pulled the stingray’s tail out of his own chest before he lost his fight for life - remains a great lost for the people who admired him and of course for his family.
Australian officials have suggested a state funeral to commemorate the gung-ho wildlife expert, however, his dad Bob Irwin said that’s the last think Steve would have wanted. In other related news, the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin said in a 2002 interview “If I’m going to die, at least I want it filmed.” Ironic a tape does exist of Irwin’s fatal encounter with a stingray while filming a TV show.
