Mariah Carey

The pop diva Mariah Carey, who had four nominations, took just one prize at the American Music Awards. Mariah won the night’s first award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist, but lost the Favorite Female Pop/Rock category to Gwen Stefani.
‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, was then beaten in the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories by Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ and Destiny’s Child’s ‘Destiny Fulfilled’.

Green Day, country star Tim McGraw, ‘American Idol’ winner Kelly Clarkson, the Black Eyed Peas and Destiny’s Child all collected two of the prestigious gongs. Rap star Missy Elliott won Favorite Female Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and dedicated her award to late singer and friend Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001. But many of the winning acts did not attend the event, among them rappers 50 Cent and Eminem.
