David Beckham has called nine-year-old charity fundraiser Kirsty Howard at her hospital bed, after she suffered a serious health setback. She was born with her heart back to front and was given only weeks to live at the age of four. Her condition was critical on Friday night in the Manchester Children’s Hospital, Pendlebury, when she lost consciousness and was put on a life support machine. But by Sunday she was breathing unaided and appeared to be pulling back.
Kirsty became friends with Beckham after she led out the England team in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece in 2001 and took a call from the England captain, who has called her his little angel, in hospital in Manchester.
Kirsty, who was the first child to win the Helen Rollason Award for outstanding courage and achievement in the face of adversity, has fronted campaigns to raise millions for Francis House.
She received the award at the last BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
